Depression(抑郁症)is a serious problem today. One expert says that depression is like cancer because it is “widespread, costly and deadly”. Depression hits one person in five around the world. Over any six-month period, between five to seven percent of the world's population will be suffering from a serious depression.

A recent research shows that the more teenagers watch television, the more likely they are to develop depression as young adults.

The researchers used a nationwide long-term survey of teenage health to investigate(调查) the relationship between media(传播媒介) use and depression. They based their findings on more than four thousand teenagers who were not depressed when the survey began in 2000.

As part of the survey, the young people were asked how many hours of television or videos they watched daily. They were also asked how often they played computer games and listened to the radio. Media use totaled an average of five and one-half hours a day. More than two hours of that was spent watching TV.

Seven years later, in 2007, more than seven percent of the young people had signs of depression. The average age at that time was twenty-one.

The researchers say they did not find any such relationship with the use of other media such as movies, video games of radio etc. But the study did find that every extra hour of television meant an eight percent increase in the chances of developing signs of depression. Young men were more likely than young women to develop depression given the same amount of media use.

The study didn’t explore if watching TV causes depression. But one possibility is that it was taking time away from activities that could help prevent depression.

Last December, the journal Social Indicators Research published a study of activities that help lead to happy lives. Sociologists from the University of Maryland found that people who describe themselves as happy spend less time watching television than unhappy people. The study found that happy people are more likely to be socially active, to read, to take part in religious services and to vote.

I work in downtown Orlando and have been passing by the same homeless woman every week. She never asks me for money, but always greets me with a smile.

I wrote in a Facebook post(帖子), “Each Tuesday,Amy Joe simply says ‘Good morning, sir, have a great day’ and smiles. I wear a suit to work every day so I get asked for money quite often downtown but never once from Amy.”

Every Tuesday Amy and I now have lunch together, during which I get to hear how positive she is even though she really has nothing. Last week Amy dropped a bomb on me — she can’t read. She told me how hard it was for her to find work without being able to read. She began to use her collected money to check out library books instead of buying food.

I have been blessed with a family that has provided me with anything I want. Amy Joe has not. So I started to teach her to read. I borrowed one library book each week and we read it together on Tuesday and she practiced on her own throughout the rest of the week.

The aim of this post is not to make anyone feel sorry for Amy or admire me for doing something good. I want to share this because there are a lot of people out there like Amy. You will never know what you can do for someone until you try. Who is your Amy Joe?

I have also started a GoFundMe page for Amy, and have raised $5,000. The donations will go toward food, clothing, a library card, and much more to help the less fortunate (幸运的)in downtown Orlando.

  D. He borrows books and reads with her.

“Shopping has never been so easy. With just a single click on your mouse, anything that you order online can be taken to your door in no time,” said Bian Jing, who is twenty years old. She took part in an online competition held in Beijing. Each competitor had to go online and buy enough food and drink to last them for 100 hours using the little money given. “I don’t want to spend too much time shopping, so I do it online rather than in an ordinary (普通的) store,” said a girl from a middle school. “It’s easy to find the things you want online as they have catalogues. Shoppers who go online can also find lower prices and wider choices of things they want to buy.

But many teachers and parents are worried that online shopping is becoming too popular.

“It’s not a good way for middle school students to spend their money,” said a teacher. “I don’t like them to shop online.” As all the students’ money is from their parents, it’s said that they aren’t ready to pay for what their children have bought online.” There’s also the danger that they’ll lose the money at online stores that just want to cheat (欺骗) shoppers,” one of the teachers said.

Most parents, though, don’t want to pay the bills when their children spend too much on the Internet. “I hate having to pay unexpected bills,” said one father. “But my son always surprises me with them”
