A young man who asked his girlfriend out on adate canceled the date and stayed at home because of the bad weather. Meanwhile, in the same apartment building, a pregnant lady who was lying in bed already, suddenly decided to drive out to grab some food. As she was driving back in the heavy rain, the lightning struck her building. And she saw the whole building collapsing in front of her in the storm.

All the residents of that building, including the young man, lost their lives in that accident. Yet the pregnant lady survived.

This is a story of fate by author, Kuang Ni from Hong Kong. Dead oralive, all depended on that one thought. Is this a made-up story, or a true reflection of our lives?

You have probably also e_perienced how one decision potentially leads to adramatic and different result. So is it accidental, or inevitable? Does destiny e_ist? If so, how is it formed? Can it be changed? How do we change it?

My dad published a book titled Enlightenment in 2012. It’s a book about Buddhism and its wisdom that may help you in life. I say “A life-changing book” here because first of all, it is what the Chinese characters on the cover mean; secondly it is my own father’s book and of course I want to sell it; but thirdly, it indeed is “Alife-changing book.”

Ever since he published book, he has wanted me to translate his book when I grow more proficient in English. I doubt that I have the ability to translate his book yet, but I’d like to take this opportunity to share some bits and parts of his insights on Buddhism; especially those on Zen Buddhism that have helped me in my life. This speech will partially be a rough translation of the first chapter of his book, as he wishes, and partially my personal e_perience with Zen.

Since the day we’re born, we’ve stepped into a huge maze with only one e_it. The e_it leads to the tranquil middle path that Buddhism is looking for. And only by finding the right road can we e_it the maze that is full of suffering. Different thing shappen to different people in our lives, but you should know that every hardship or impasse you face comes from the seeds of your past ignorance and presumptuous acts. There’s nothing we could do with things that already happened, but that doesn’t mean we have to stop searching for the way out. In fact, according to Buddhist teaching, if we wake up from the ignorance, we can definitely leave the maze.

There is a kind of dandelion in Canada that cangrow out of the ground again even if it’s been pulled out by its roots. Some specialists latter found out that this kind of dandelion has roots that are eight meters down into the earth, and at the end of the roots, there’s a seed. Even if the roots are taken out, the dandelion can grow out again because of its seed.

In the pitch-black night, stung by jellyfish, choking on salt water, singing to herself, hallucinating, Diana Nyad just kept on swimming. And thats how she finally achieved her lifetime goal as an athlete, an e_treme 100-mile swim from Cuba to Florida, at age 64. Hear her story.

Its the fifth time Diana Nyad stand on the Cuban shore believing again that she’s going to make it all the way across that vast, dangerous wilderness of an ocean.

Life is about the journey, but not really the destination. Weve been on a journey. Lets face it, were all on a one-way street. What are we going to do as we go forward to have no regrets looking backTeddy Roosevelt quote was floating around in her brain over the past years in training. It says, "You go ahead and sit back in your comfortable chair as a critic or an observer, while the brave one gets in the ring, engages, gets bloody and dirty, and fails over and over and over again. Yet he isnt afraid or timid and lives life in a bold way." When you achieve your dreams, its not so much what you get as who you have become in achieving them.

You have a dream and obstacles in front of you as we all do. None of us ever get through this life without heartache, without turmoil. Believe in perseverance and have faith. Get back up again when you can get knocked down and you will find your way.

"I have three messages," said the breathless Nyad. “The first is we should never ever give up. The second is you are never too old to chase your dreams. And the third is that it looks like the most solitary endeavor in the world but it takes a team.”

Hellen Keller said, “Although the world is full of suffering, it is full also of the overcoming of it.” People always fail because they stop trying, not because they encounter the unbeatable difficulties. "Never, never give up" means to keep trying and never stop working for your goals. I think it’s a very good piece of advice for all of us and this is the most important thing that can help us to achieve our goals.

I am quite sure that everybody knows Thomas Edison. Why so many people tried to invent the electric lamp, but only Thomas Edison succeedIf Edison, like many others, had been stilted by repeated failures, there would be no vibrant modern cities at night. His success proves that if a person is not scared by seemingly insurmountable adversity, he can find the way to success.

In my opinion, never stop working for your goal doesn’t mean you must be successful. It doesnt even mean that you must achieve your goal, but its very important to keep it in your mind. There are enough unfavorable conditions which make our lives difficult, but what important for us is to make efforts towards your goal or your dream. If you have given your best for your goal or your dream, whether you succeed or not, at least you wont leave any regret in your life.

Dont give up working for your goal or your dream. If you succeed, you will taste great joy in your life. If you dont succeed, you wont have regret in your life because you have given your best.

Dreams are hard to follow, hold on and there will be tomorrow. You will find the way with the strength to carry on. Don’t give up.

Hello everyone! My name is___, a student from_______college. I am glad to give you a speech about my university. The title of my speech is My college, my home.

Last September I left my hometown with heavy baggage and after a journey of ten hours, I came to this dream campus with great e_pectation and e_citement.

I was deeply attracted by the elegant environment of our campus the moment I stepped into the university. Straight, wide roads enjoyed the shade and shelter provided by lordly, green trees. Ancient buildings of great refinement enjoyed the company of flocks of birds flying and singing overhead. Scrolls of warm welcome greeted me and volunteers with smiles came to my help. My heart was filled with warmth. Yeah, this is the place where I will spend 4 years and this place will be my home!

Whenever I recall the past days, so many thoughts are flooding in my mind. But what impressed me most is a night when I got a stomachache during the first days. I had to turn to the aunts in charge of our dormitory for help. They were so friendly and warm-hearted. They gave me the pills and reminded me of having more hot water. I recovered soon and I thanked them from the bottom of my heart because they brought me the warmth of home.

Our university is a famous academic center. The teaching staff are all learned professors. Many of them are world-wide known for their wide range of knowledge and charming personality. I respect my teachers! I admire my teachers! I love my teachers! Various activities are carried here. They not only bring me happiness but also improve myself. I meet with a lot of classmates and make a large number of friends. When I feel upset, the will give me a hand; when I am happy, I will share with them. The library has a large collection of books and I always lose myself in it. I believe they will benefit me a lot and are to broaden the roads of my future.

I love you,____University! You are just a place which gives me warmth and strengths! You are my home!

Hello, ladies and gentlemen. It’s great to be here. First of all, thanks for your coming. Tonight, what I am gonna talk about is innovation. Who can tell me what is innovation? We all know that, since 1978, China has been through the greatest changes brought by the reform and opening-up. So what we can see from the reform and opening-up? The power of innovation. That’s why I am here. I am here to show you my Chinese dream. I want to talk about the future and how were going to win it. If we want to make innovation. But firstly, we should make sure that China is a place where we can make it if we try, where we can go as far as hard work and big dreams will take us. We understand that it’s not going to be a cakewalk, this competition for the future, which means all of us are going to have to do our best. We are going to have to win the future by being smarter and working harder and working together. Innovation is the spirit of our country, the motive force for our country’s prosperity.

Sparking the imagination and creativity of our people, unleashing new discoveries -- thats what China will do better than any other country on Earth. From the moment we have a new idea, we can e_plore it; we can develop it with a research grant; we can protect it with a patent; we can market it with a loan to start a new business. We’ve got a chain that takes a great idea all the way through. We must be confirmed that, today, the challenges we face are real.

They are serious they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But we will somehow find a way to overcome the difficulties. My major is ___. My job is to discover or create new drugs for many diseases like cancer. You know that laboratory is the place where miracles happen. Believe it or not. What I do can save millions of people’s lives. For a long time, what challenges me is how to commercialize research. You come up with a great idea, but moving that new discovery from theory to practice or from the lab to the marketplace, thats re ally a big job. That’s what we should focus on.

We need to act with a sense of urgency-to study and work and create as if the fate of the country depends on us-because it does. It depends on us. Thank you!

the mid-autumn festival has all interesting history. long ago in one of the dynasties of china there was a king who was very cruel to the people and did not manage the country well. the people were so angry that some brave ones suggested killing the king. so they wrote notes telling about the meeting place and time and put them into cakes. on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month every person was told to buy the cakes. when they ate them they discovered the notes. so they gathered together to make a sudden attack on the king. from then on the chinese people celebrate on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month and eat "moon cakes" in memory of that important event. when the mid-autumn festival is near, shop windows are

beautifully decorated. many "moon cakes" are displayed for people to buy. people send presents such aswine, fruits and "moon cakes" to their friends and relatives. in the evening of the day, they have a feast. after the feast, they go out to the garden to look at the moon. the children run and laugh on the streets.

it is believed that the moon is at her brightest on this night. many poems have been written about it, and poets are never tired of reading and writing such poems. in chinese literature, the moon of the mid autumn festival has been compared to a looking-glass, a jade rabbit, and so on. it seems that chinese literature takes far more interest in the moon than in the sun.
