ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls,

i am chinese. i am proud of being a chinese with five thousand years of civilization behind. i've learned about the four great inventions made by our forefathers. i've learned about the great wall and the yangtze river. i've learned about zhang heng(张衡)and i've learned about zheng he(郑和).who says the yellow river civilization has vanished(消失)?i know that my ancestors have made miracles(奇迹)on this fertile land and we're still making miracles. who can ignore the fact that we have established ourselves as a great state in the world, that we have devised our own nuclear weapons, that we have successfully sent our satellites into space, and that our gnp ranks no. 7 in the world? we have experienced the plunders (掠夺) by other nations, and we have experienced the war. yet, based on such ruins, there still stands our nation----china, unyielding and unconquerable! i once came across an american tourist. she said, “china has a history of five thousand years, but the us only has a history of 200 years. five thousand years ago, china took the lead in the world, and now it is the us that is leading.”my heart was deeply touched by these words. it is true that we're still a developing nation, but it doesn't mean that we can despise (鄙视) ourselves. we have such a long-standing history, we have such abundant resources, we have such intelligent and diligent people, and we have enough to be proud of. we have reasons to say proudly: we are sure to take the lead in the world in the future again, for our problems are big, but our ambition (雄心) is even bigger, our challenges (挑战) are great, but our will is even greater.

i am chinese. i have inherited (继承) black hair and black eyes. i have inherited the virtues of my ancestors. i have also taken over responsibility. i am sure, that wherever i go, whatever i do, i shall never forget that i am chinese!

One Student Is Just Like a Flower

My dear Mr. and Misses, my fellows schoolmates,

Good morning! As you know and see, it is a sunny bump harvest season. In the city, in our school campus, everywhere is surrounded with roses which we together planted 4 years ago. Today may these roses and our friendship as well be together and comfort our excited hearts!

It was four years ago that everyone of us came from every part of China and formed a new collective. As we are young, it’s very easy for us to communicate. It was in the past four years that we were ambitious. It was in the past four years that we worried. It was in the past four years that we were content. It was in the past four years that we were vexed. It was in the past four years that we were friendly and lonely ... and it was in the past fours that we studied, lived and respected each other with genuine and with our ambitions. Nothing in the world is more significant than we miss all of these.

We miss you—teachers who are tireless in teaching; we will keep your gestures and your white hairs in our hearts deeply; we will miss the quietness with the lights at night in the classroom; we will miss the race and exercise on the playground; we will miss even the crowds in the dining hall and the quarrel on the beds; we will still miss every green piece and every piece of waste paper flying like flakes in the air ... However, today we will leave nothing but the first rose with our Alma Mater and our teachers which is entrusted with our love and respect.

4 years seems very long but 4 years seems very short. From now on, we all will go into the society. The society is broad and wide for us. We will shoulder heavy responsibilities; we will work diligently; and we will expect to be informed of good news from one another. Now, I beg you all to cherish the occasion; to remember the names, the status, appearance and the character of the person around you. Now let’s be hand in hand together; let’s present the rose to each other. May the rose carry our appreciation and blessing! We are very closely linked no matter what the world may be. May the fresh rose in our hands keep its fragrants!

Thank you all again!

Student Speech Delivered at the Washington University Engineering Graduate Student Recognition Ceremony15 May 1997Lorrie Faith CranorFaculty, family, friends, and fellow graduates, good evening.

I am honored to address you tonight.

On behalf of the graduating masters and doctoral students of Washington Universitys School of Engineering and Applied Science, I would like to thank all the parents, spouses, families, and friends who encouraged and supported us as we worked towards our graduate degrees.

I would especially like to thank my own family, eight members of which are in the audience today.

I would also like to thank all of the department secretaries and other engineering school staff members who always seemed to be there when confused graduate students needed help.

And finally I would like to thank the Washington University faculty members who served as our instructors, mentors, and friends. As I think back on the seven-and-a-half years I spent at Washington University, my mind is filled with memories, happy, sad, frustrating, and even humorous.

Tonight I would like to share with you some of the memories that I take with me as I leave Washington University.I take with me the memory of my office on the fourth floor of Lopata Hall - the room at the end of the hallway that was too hot in summer, too cold in winter, and always too far away from the womens restroom.

The window was my offices best feature.

Were it not for the physics building across the way, it would have afforded me a clear view of the arch.

But instead I got a view of the roof of the physics building.

I also had a view of one corner of the roof of Urbauer Hall, which seemed to be a favorite perch for various species of birds who alternately won perching rights for several weeks at a time. And I had a nice view of the physics courtyard, noteworthy as a good place for watching people run their dogs.

Its amazing how fascinating these views became the longer I worked on my dissertation.

But my favorite view was of a nearby oak tree.

From my fourth-floor vantage point I had a rather intimate view of the tree and the various birds and squirrels that inhabit it.

Occasionally a bird would land on my window sill, which usually had the effect of startling both of us.

I take with me the memory of two young professors who passed away while I was a graduate student.

Anne Johnstone, the only female professor from whom I took a course in the engineering school, and Bob Durr, a political science professor and a member of my dissertation committee, both lost brave battles with cancer. I remember them fondly.I take with me the memory of failing the first exam in one of the first engineering courses I took as an undergraduate.

I remember thinking the course was just too hard for me and that I would never be able to pass it.

So I went to talk to the professor, ready to drop the class.

And he told me not to give up, he told me I could succeed in his class.

For reasons that seemed completely ludicrous at the time, he said he had faith in me. And after that my grades in the class slowly improved, and I ended the semester with an A on the final exam.

I graduated, not too much excitement, too much regret. Looking back at the high school life of the three years, I was transformed by a bright, sunny, ignorant kid into the silent, cold, sad boy now. There are too many stories.

I was hurt by my high school learning, and a completely different model from junior high, which didn't fit me right now. It's been pushed down to the bottom, occasionally up and down. One day, my mother said to me, "my son, don't let your grades fall." I said, "mom, don't worry, I'll never go back again. I'm at the bottom." You may be smiling, but I can't. Then I heard that my mother gave the "classic dialogue" to the principal of my junior high school. The principal said, "what a personality!" I couldn't laugh more. The low self-esteem of study made me unable to lift my head, so I became silent and stopped talking.

In high school, I first experienced the dorm life firsthand. Still remember the first night in my high school dormitory. For the first time,

So far away from home, like a group of strangers, lying in a narrow bed in an unfamiliar environment. Naturally I can't sleep, and so are others (and many of them are junior middle school students). We talked together, and we learned a lot from each other. That night, we chatted until 3:30 in the morning. They couldn't choke and slept. I still can't sleep, thinking about parents, relatives, junior high school teachers, classmates, now, can't sleep in this unfamiliar environment, I cried, cried in this strange place devoted to Ming. I have to stay here for three years. So I learned to adapt. Every day for the rest of the day, there were four classical buildings in the school -- classrooms, dormitories, canteens and toilets. There is no shortage of fun in a seemingly monotonous life. Is the most worth out of dormitory culture, lie talk is an essential link in every night before going to bed, I let the foolish boy learned a lot: I know, know to appreciate the beautiful girl, know the YY. At the same time, I also learned about life in other places and realized the reality of society. Li set is a poor place where you can't buy good things with a turn of money. So over the next three years, I became more expensive.

In high school, the social circle is larger than junior high, and the town is expanded to the area. Meet more friends and gain more friendship. To make friends with the heart, to get friends from the heart. Thanks to my friends, it taught me that "smile is the most important way to improve image cost." The church has taught me that "love only makes people weak"; Teach me "not to waste new tears for old sorrow"... Of course, there is no shortage of them, but I have learned a lot from them. Learn how to juggle the relationship between the use and the use, and learn that "the most despicable is not ruthless but the use of emotion". I will not hate them because my friends have taught me that "only those who can tolerate others can be tolerant of others." I also learned to be grateful, to know what love was, and to experience my feelings for the first time. The only regret is that I don't feel loved.

Three years had passed before I knew it. I grew up a lot. The good and bad experiences of the past have made me yearn for the past, the present, the longing for the future. My aversion to present has made me negative, and the unknown has made me sad.

The dispersion may be the beginning, the gathering may mean the end. Do not dwell in the sorrows of the scattered, nor linger in the joy of gathering. Day by day, the past will not come again, today will be the past of tomorrow. I will set sail for the unknown tomorrow.
