  Howard takes center stage

THE ball is passed to him near the basket. Immediately, two more defenders come to help the one already guarding him. Facing three men, what does he do? Pass out to a teammate?

No! He jumps and dunks (扣篮) in their faces. It sounds like Shaquille O'Neal, right? Well, it's actually one of the NBA's rising stars, Dwight Howard.

At only 22 years old, Howard is already the leader of the Orlando Magic. Now his popularity even outshines Shaq's. Howard leads the voting (投票) to play center in the NBA All-star exhibition game on February 17.

In fact, some people are calling Howard a young Shaq. There are lots of similarities between the two. Both Shaq and Howard were selected as the number one pick in the NBA draft (选秀). They both play the same position. And both started their careers with the Orlando Magic.

Shaquille O'Neal once said that when he retired, it would be the end of power players in the NBA. He pointed out that players like Yao Ming and Dirk Nowitzki use their skills more than their strength. But people say Howard proves this is not the case. "I think Dwight is more of an old style center like Shaq. He loves to grab rebounds (篮板球) and play aggressively (有闯劲地)," said former Magic player Grant Hill.

Although Howard may play like Shaq, he doesn't act like him. Shaq has a loud personality and loves the media (媒体) attention. Howard, on the other hand, has a gentle personality. He was raised in a traditional family and doesn't use bad language.

Shaq and Howard are not opposites, though. They both like to joke. They took part in a break dancing contest that had the audience (观众) rolling around on the floor in laughter. The winner? "Shaq won," said Howard. "I am still learning, and the old guy has some very good moves."

Sweetie goes on to fly high

TAIWANESE pop singer Cyndi Wang can always give you a sense of sweetness. However, behind her hearty smiles and sweet songs, she has experienced a great deal of hardship (艰辛) on her road to success.

"Before I made my first album I was sent to Japan for training for three months," said Cyndi, the independent girl who didn't come from a rich family. "Sometimes it got so intense (紧张) every day that I got hurt and ached (疼) all over and couldn't fall asleep at night at all."

On November 30, her latest album, Fly! Cyndi came out around the country. The album lends a touch of romance to the winter season.

The title song Drifting (《飘飘》) combines Thai folk with modern dance music. It's fast, lively and exotic. Cyndi studied Thai dance for it. For one move, she had to spin (旋转) around 18 times non-stop while holding a fan. She fell over many times and injured her knee (膝盖).

"I'm not the one who got fame overnight," she said, "I got close to my dream small step by small step since I graduated from an art school. I know the difficulties."

In fact, Cyndi's beloved grandma passed away (去世) not long ago, and she sank into a deep sorrow (悲伤) for her. For a short while she canceled (取消) all her work.

Cyndi came from a divorced (离婚的) family. Her grandma raised her, and it was her grandma who taught her to speak word by word. Grandma often came to Cyndi's performances to support her.

Now Cyndi has cheered up. Sometimes she can't help crying, but she wants to work hard to make her grandma proud in heaven.
