  Growing up, one year on

IT'S been a year since the Wenchuan earthquake, which left many dead and many more upset and scared. As the quake areas are now being rebuilt, do students feel better, and what are their lives like? Teens has talked to two students to find out.

  Wu Xinnan, 16,

  Dujiangyan Foreign Language Experimental School

Wu likes leaning through the window of her makeshift dorm (宿舍) and looking outside. There, some buildings are under construction – Her school's new classrooms. Teachers say that they will move in next semester and Wu can't wait for that day to come. Three months after the earthquake, Wu entered her new school without a formal entrance exam (入学考试). She couldn't concentrate (集中精神) in class at first. Some of her classmates, especially those who had lost family members, didn't talk and always stayed alone. One year later, things are much better.

Everyone seems to work extremely hard, with busy classes between 6:30 am and 10:00 pm every day. Wu won't allow herself to fall behind, either. She only goes back to stay with her parents on Saturdays. They are still staying in a temporary room after losing their house. She never asks for pocket money since her dad lost his job at a restaurant – another victim (受害者) of the earthquake. "I rarely buy anything," she said.

  Luo Qin, 16,

  Mianyang Shuidian School

Luo has a motto: "Take time to enjoy life". That's why she was seen everywhere during her school's recent speech contest and sports meeting remembering the one-year anniversary (周年纪念) of the earthquake. During the May Day holiday, Luo and her friends volunteered to help pick tea for Beichuan farmers in mountainous areas. This year has seen a rise in the tea grown, but not enough people to work on the farms. Many families are busy building their new homes.

Luo said she used to be rebellious (叛逆的), but the earthquake matured (使成熟) her and taught her to care for others. Once a month she goes back home with a little gift for her grandma. "She was scared during the earthquake. I always tell her that she must enjoy a long life after the disaster."

  Florida in the summertime

Joyce Yuan and her host family

AS I began to feel completely sick of the cold North American winter, Spring break finally arrived! What made me even more excited was that we were going to Florida to enjoy the warm weather!

Just imagine wearing short sleeves (袖子) or a swimsuit under the hot Florida sun!

Before the vacation started, we had a little episode (插曲) at the airport. The alarm (警报) sounded when my host mom and me were walking through the security (安全) check. We were taken away to have further checks, but when they finally told us that we could go, we felt relieved (放心的) and amused. It was just because of the decorations (装饰品) on my pants and the tinfoil (锡纸) around my host mom's chewing gum! — Just as a reminder, no overly fashionable pants or tinfoil on a plane!

Of course, I had a lot of first experiences during this special vacation. Since eight of us were living in a house, we had to share bedrooms. I, fortunately or unfortunately, had to share a room with my 4-year-old host sister. She is tiny compared to me, but she took up about two thirds of the bed. Moreover, because I was not used to sleeping in the same room with others, I was afraid of waking her up and hardly slept at all.

Luckily, except for that, everything went really well. My host family were really warm-hearted, and they wanted me to try everything new. With their “persuasion” (劝说), I was “forced” to go kayaking (划皮艇), which turned out to be really fun. We went through some canals (运河) and I saw manatees (海牛) and dolphins with my own eyes for the very first time!

When we finally landed in Wisconsin again, everyone looked tanned (晒成棕色的) and full of energy!

  Meeting the Maoris

Li Jun on board the boat Pangaea

I HAVE safely arrived on the boat Pangaea. It's amazing that all of us get the chance to be the captain of it! This is the boat that Mike Horn once sailed to the South Pole (南极).

We stopped in Bluff (a place on the Southern Island of New Zealand), and set off to meet the Maoris (毛利人).

I thought at first that the Maoris were wild men living in a tribe (部落) and wearing animal fur (毛). But actually they live just as we do, both with their clothes and food.

We came to a hut (小屋), which was decorated (装饰) with patterns from long ago. Before entering, we were told to line up, men following women as an old woman stood in front of the hut singing. You can tell that they haven't left all their traditions behind.

The old lady gave us an introduction to the legends of New Zealand, the Maoris and the Pounamu (a local green stone).

Then came the most interesting part, sharing the Maoris' song and dance. Boys learnt how to dance the Haka and for girls it's the Uka. While the Maoris performed the songs, I enjoyed rocking my body and blinking my eyes with the rhythm (节奏), an instinct (本能) that came straight from the heart. Awesome!

What's more surprising was that after the show, an old Maori lady came to tell me that she had two granddaughters whose faces looked just like mine!

Yes, the first Maoris sailed to New Zealand from Asia, which might indicate a close relationship with Chinese people! No wonder I was so moved by the dances and songs the Maoris have! It is so heartwarming to touch a culture that is so far away, but which you can relate to so closely.

Li Jun won a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity after seeing a piece of short world news in 21st Century Teens last October. In January, she joined a 10-day training camp to the Alps in Switzerland, set up by South African explorer Mike Horn. Now she is on a 15-day trip to the Southern Island of New Zealand with eight teenagers from around the world.
