  Coupons to spend

“HOW did you spend your coupons?”

On their first day back to school, many students in Hangzhou greeted each other this way.

The coupons referred to are the 100 yuan coupons each student received from the city government before the Spring Festival holidays.Over 260,000 primary school and middle school students were given coupons. They could use them in local stores and supermarkets, or to see movies and buy books.

The same coupons have also been given to low income families in Hangzhou. Other cities, including Chengdu and Nanjing, also issued (颁发) coupons to their citizens. More cities are expected to follow their lead.

Why are local governments doing this?

These programs are all part of a broader effort in China to increase domestic demand in the face of the global financial crisis (危机).

The crisis has seriously affected China's exports and investments (投资) . Factories in southern cities have been closed down. Companies are laying off workers or reducing their pay. The stock market (股市) and real estate (房地产) market have been falling.

In a time of financial crisis, people usually respond by saving money. They are uncertain about the future and are afraid that more difficult times may be ahead. Now many people are choosing not to spend money carelessly. Major chain stores have seen a sharp slowdown in sales, analysts (分析家) say.

But spending keeps an economy healthy. If people don't spend, there will be too many products in the markets. Then shops will stop buying products from factories. When factories receive no orders, they close down. The workers there accordingly lose their jobs. Also, if people don't spend, the service industry suffers. The total result is that the whole economy breaks down .

Issuing coupons is a practical and effective way to increase domestic demand in the current situation, said Jiang Zengwei, vice-minister of China's Ministry (部) of Commerce. Hangzhou reported a rise in customers in local markets during Spring Festival holiday.

However, issuing coupons is only a temporary measure. To increase consumers' confidence, the government needs to establish a sound secure social system (社会保障体系) in the long term. When people don't have to worry about education, health care and their pension (养老金,退休金), they will be more willing to spend instead of saving.

Li was born for the role

WHAT would life be like if an ancient person lived in a modern society? You don't need go too far to find out the answer. Li Xudan, 18, seems cut off from the rest of the world.

In a noisy crowd, she is the one who' s left alone, slowly stroking (抚摸) her long black hair with her fingers. She likes flowery dresses and refuses to wear jeans.

Her quietness and elegance (优雅) finally landed her the role of Lin Daiyu in the Dream of the Red Chamber talent show on June 10.

"I felt lucky to get the chance to act in the drama," she said. "It gives me a place protected from the world that I found it hard to mix in, and it gives me a life I've been searching for, for a long time."

At age eight, Li was sent to live at her grandfather's place, a courtyard (庭院) at the foot of Zijin Mountain in Nanjing. She spent almost 10 years there. Far away from the downtown (市中心), Li grew up listening to the sound of insects and watching the fish in the pond.

While other kids were hauling their schoolbags to class, she stayed at home where her grandpa taught her traditional Chinese literature and culture. She also received a traditional education in calligraphy (书法) and the guzheng. She displayed her poetic talent by putting her sentiments (多愁善感) into her poems.

Li first came to know the life of Lin Daiyu in the Shaoxing Opera version of Dream of the Red Chamber. She loved it so much that she attended a drama school in Jiangsu, at age 12. When she got a chance to read the book, she was absorbed in its world at once. After that, a copy of the book was always at her bedside.

"This 'Sister Lin' didn't fall from heaven," said director Hu Mei. "She was brought up in the ways of Daiyu. Every move or expression of hers expresses it."

Li got both praise and criticism (批评), but she wasn't upset. "I came for the 'Dream'," Li said, "I struggle for the ideal and won't get lost in the world."
