  Educated by his life

YOU may know Ray Ma (马天宇) from his hit single, Damn Tender (《该死的温柔》). Now the 21-year-old wants to challenge himself by playing four roles in the music video for his new song, Qingyi (《青衣》).

With Ma's photo album coming out this month, Teens talked with him about his career and life.

Teens: People say you are mentally strong despite the fact that you look tender. What do you think?

Ma: Yes. I'm strong. I had experiences some of my peers didn't have. When I was young, I was good at fertilizing (施肥) the fields, picking up the corn and keeping the cows. The hard life made me tough. I could work harder than anyone to prove my worth.

Teens: You dropped out of school at Senior 2, but you never stop learning. How did you achieve this?

Ma: It's a pity that I couldn't continue with my studies because of poverty. However, I never gave up. I tried to gain experience. I worked in restaurants and as a fashion assistant for a magazine in Beijing. I learn from every single task in life. I enrolled (考入) into the Beijing Film Academy in 2006, which opened a new chapter for me.

Teens: You earned fame at a young age. What's your view on fame?

Ma: I have learned that there's a lot for me to fulfill in the big world. I have to dig out all my potential talents.

I have a relaxed approach to fame. There are things that will never change. For instance, the close ties with my family are as important as ever. I want to keep the virtues (美德) of being caring and polite as well.

Teens: What advice about life can you give your teenage fans?

Ma: My advice is to treasure every day at school. Most of the knowledge and skills that I've acquired when I was a teenager have proved to be useful in my career one way or another. Actually you can never predict what kind of talent you need someday in your life!

  Fiona's day has come

APRIL 18 was the day for Hong Kong singer Fiona Sit (薛凯琪).

It was the day her latest album, It's My Day, came out. As her first Mandarin record, the CD features ten songs. The title song It's My Day marks Fiona's exploration of rock sounds.

"Listening to the songs is like talking to a friend whom you haven't seen for a while," she said.

Fiona, 26, broke into the music scene in 2004. She admitted (承认) that she once dreamed of being a star and enjoying the fame. But the biggest benefit she received is bridging the generation gap in her family.

Before Fiona complained that her parents always embarrassed (令……尴尬) her. "When I hang out with my friends, they asked me to phone home every hour to make sure I was OK." Her father went to pick her up after school even when she was 18.

So when a talent scout (星探) spotted her in 2002, she started to work as a part-time model because she thought the job was a good excuse to get away from her parents.

But the love Fiona had taken for granted became her spiritual support after she entered show business. "They are the ones who trust me in the swirl of gossip and the first to comfort me," she said. "I really treasure them more."
