Yano Koji 'invades' your TV screens

WHEN Yano Koji takes a stroll (闲逛) around Beijing, strangers often call out to him, either by name, or by saying: "Are you the guizi (Japanese invader) on TV?"

The screen star, popular for his roles as a Japanese officer during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1937-45), says he doesn't get offended (生气) by people calling him guizi.

"I never get attacked on the street. On the contrary, I have more and more fans in China," Yano says.

The 33-year-old says that even though most of his characters meet miserable ends, he doesn't get fed up with it."I didn't develop a deep understanding of the war until I came to China, because there are seldom movies or television programs about the war in Japan," he says.

"Because of shooting TV shows, I have been to many places where the war took place. The more I learn about it, the more ashamed I feel. History shouldn't be forgotten."

With eight years' acting experience in Japan, Yano first came to Beijing in 2000 to shoot the Chinese TV drama Eternal Lovers (《永恒恋人》).

He then made up his mind to continue to try his luck in China. "I wasn't satisfied with my achievements in Japan. I wanted a new environment to learn something new," he says.

Over the past few years, Yano has starred in 17 Chinese TV series, mostly as Japanese military officers.

In 2005, TV drama The Proof of Memories (《记忆的证明》) was shown on China Central Television. Yano was criticized on his website in Japan for taking the role.

"I didn't worry about it, I just ignored and deleted their words. Nowadays, I no longer receive any spiteful (恶意的) comments on my website."

Angela takes a brand new approach to music

ANGELA Chang (张韶涵) is back on the music scene after starring in the hit TV drama Romantic Princess. Her latest album Ang 5.0 was released on December 14.

The pop princess is now more mature and has a brand new look. She has cut the long hair that defined her image for over five years. Now with neatly trimmed (修剪) short hair, Chang looks more energetic. She dresses more elegantly (优雅地) as well.

Yet the changes go beyond her image on the cover of the CD. Chang explores different styles of music, from sweet pop melodies to light rock. Jay Chou also wrote an R&B song for her.

However, one thing remains unchanged about Chang: She knows what she wants and goes straight after it. "I don't want to be a shooting star," said Chang. "I want a stellar (恒星般的) career."

This year, she has been working hard at her two booming careers: singing and acting. In fact, her schedule has been so packed that she even missed the rare chance to co-star with Hong Kong actor Stephen Chow (周星驰) in the new film Dragon Ball.

Although Chang is busy, she will still make time to come to the Beijing Olympics. She says she will visit Beijing next year and cheer for her star, hurdler Liu Xiang.
