  C

I know a woman who complained about how expensive it was to stay warm in her house in winter. Her problem was that she was wearing shorts an T-shirts inside and then turning the thermostat(恒温器)way up, which caused her furnace to use more natural gas and her heating bill to climb. By putting on long pants and long-sleeve shirts, she could keep warm and turn the thermostat down, which saved money.

Each degree you lower your thermostat can save you up to 3 percent on heating. When you are paying to heat the air, you certainly don’t want to lose it. So it’s also important to identify areas where warm air gets out or cold air gets in. And the fixes don’t have to be expensive.

I traced a cold draft in my living room to the old keyhole in the front door. Since the keyhole was no longer used, I fixed it with packing material and the draft disappeared. I also realized that my bedroom was cold because I was leaving the door open. When I keep it closed, I don’t have to pay for more heat to make the temperature in the room comfortable for me.

Another idea came to me on one of those winter days when it’s still cold outside but the sun heats up the inside of the car so much that you put the window down. On sunny winter days, I raised the blinds(百叶窗)to let some of that warmth come through the windows. Letting that sun in has a benefit beyond helping to heat my house. In a long winter, those occasional bright rays also boost my spirits. It’s not as good as a trip to Florida, but definitely cheaper.

Greyhound racing is the sixth most popular spectator sport in the United States. Over the last decade, a growing number of racers have been adopted to spend their retirement as household pets, once their racing careers are over.

Many people hesitate to adopt a retired racing greyhound because they think only very old dogs are available. Actually, even champion racers only work until they are about three-and-a-half years old. Because greyhounds usually live to be 12 to 15 years old, their retirement is much longer than their racing careers.

People worry that a greyhound will be more nervous and active than other dogs and will need a large space to run. These are false impressions. Greyhounds have naturally sweet, mild characters, and while they love to run, they are sprinters rather than distance runners and are sufficiently exercised with a few daily jumps around a fenced-in backyard.

Greyhounds tend to be a little more sensitive in their stomachs and sometimes come to rescue organizations with dental problems. The dogs may also get separation anxiety, but because they are used to being kept in a cage, the results of anxiety can be contained. They’re so gentle. If you want a low-energy dog, they’re the right dog.

Greyhounds do not make good watchdogs, but they are very good with children, get along well with other dogs(and usually cats as well), and are affectionate and loyal. They are intelligent, well-behaved dogs, usually housebroken in only a few days. A retired racing greyhound is a wonderful pet for almost anyone.

  32. How long is a greyhound’s racing career normally?

  A. 12 to 15 years. B. 3.5 to 12 years.

  C. longer than 15. D. shorter than 3.5.

  33. Which is needed for raising a greyhound?

  A. Enough room to run. B. A large cage to keep it.

  C. Good care of its stomachs. D. More exercise than other dog.

  34. Which best describes a character of a greyhound?

  A. It is easy-going. B. It is terribly anxious.

C.It is always anxious. D. It is physically active.

  35. What can be the best title for the text?

  A. Help Homeless Racing Greyhounds

  B. Ways of Training Racing Greyhounds

  C. Adopt Retired Racing Greyhounds as Pets

  D. How to Get Along with Racing Greyhounds

  Dear May,

How times flies! It has been half a year since you came to study Chinese and other subjects in my class as an exchange student. At 9 am next Saturday, you are going back home by air. Like other teachers and students of my class, I have promised to see you off at the airport. But now I’m emailing to say sorry to you, for I just have to eat my words. The fact is that from 8:30 am to 10:30 am that day I will be taking an English language test, which really I cannot miss. What a pity!

Sincerely wish you a safe and pleasant journey!

  Yours,

  Li Hua
